Washing & Cleaning Your Cycling Clothing

Published on 15 January 2025 at 07:48

Modern cycling clothing is packed with technology, featuring fancy fabrics and features like bi-component knits, zone-specific compression, and anti-bacterial treatments. With high-end jerseys and bib shorts reaching upwards of $400, it's definitely worth learning how to properly care for your cycling wardrobe to ensure it performs well and lasts as long as possible.

Do not hang your bib shorts! Lay them flat, and turn inside out to dry. Hanging them by the bib straps can stretch them out.

Use a delicate laundry bag for all clothing.

Zip all zippers and turn clothing inside out.

Never use a dryer for cycling clothing.

To wash cycling jerseys, bib shorts, tights, vests or jackets, you can machine wash them in cold water on a delicate cycle, then dry them flat.

General Tips for Washing Cycling Clothing:

  • Read the label: Always check the care label on your clothing for specific washing instructions.
  • Turn inside out: Washing clothes inside out helps prevent damage and color fading.
  • Mesh laundry bag: A mesh laundry bag protects your clothes from getting tangled and ripped in the washing machine.
  • Minimal detergent: Using too much detergent can lead to color fading.
  • Wash as soon as possible: Wash your clothes after a ride to prevent sweat from causing colors to fade.
  • Avoid fabric softener: Fabric softener can clog the pores of spandex, making it less effective at wicking away sweat.
  • Air dry: The heat from a dryer can damage high-performance fabrics. Hang dry your clothing instead.
  • Neutral soap: Opt for a neutral laundry soap designed for delicate fabrics.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Bleach and softeners can damage the wicking properties, antibacterial treatments, and waterproof finishes of your clothing.
  •

Steps for Washing Cycling Clothing:

  1. Close all zippers and velcro closures.
  2. Turn bib shorts inside out.
  3. Place bib shorts in a mesh laundry bag.
  4. Wash on a cold, delicate cycle with a short wash time and low spin speed.
  5. Do not use fabric softener.
  6. Lay flat to dry.

Additional Tips:

  • Wash your cycling clothes after each ride, especially intense rides.
  • Use a mesh laundry bag to protect delicate straps from getting caught in the agitator of a top-loader washing machine.
  • Rinse well after hand washing to remove any detergent residue.
